Everyday Athletes - In motion with Sophie and Debbie
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN EVERYDAY ATHLETE
We recently caught up with Sophie and Debbie for a chat about what it means for them to be an everyday athlete. While doing so, they were also putting our new ‘Motion’ collection to the test, as part of their daily training. Explore ‘Motion’ here.LIVING THE CREATIVE LIFE
In the last few years, Sophie @sophieohmsen_ (28 years old) found out that an ordinary 8-to-6 job didn't make her happy. This meant that in 2020 she fully embraced her dream of living a more creative life, and today she runs an art studio, selling her own paintings and posters, while also working as a freelance multimedia designer and physiotherapist. Sophie uses yoga for movement and exercise.SHARED LOVE FOR MOVEMENT AND SPORT
Debbie (50 years old) is the head of department at a local school. She has been married for 28 years and has two grown-up sons with whom she shares her love for movement and sport. Debbie's training consists of various sports including spinning, gravel cycling, running, strength training and CrossFit. Exercise and movement mean a lot to both women. For Debbie, exercise presents an opportunity to be introspective and meditative, but also offers a chance to engage and become closer to her family and friends. As she also points out, it is the best way for her to keep her body fit and healthy throughout her life.
“… I want to keep my body in shape so that I am hopefully fit and vigorous when I reach retirement age.” - Debbie
MAINTAINING A STRONG AND HEALTHY BODY
Through her work as a physiotherapist, Sophie has been made aware of how important exercise is for maintaining a strong and healthy body. For her, yoga is the perfect balance to train both her physical and mental well-being. Through yoga and painting she finds peace, de-stresses her nervous system and feels a sense of balance in her body.
“Yoga is for me the perfect balance to train both my physical and mental well-being - exactly this combination makes me want to do it again and again” Sophie
When asked about how she balances and prioritises exercise on a busy day, Sophie explains that exercise has become a priority, manifesting the ‘body-is-our-home’ mantra.
For Debbie, training is also essential, and as training is most often done together with her family, it is easy for her to be available for both, as well as being a fun way to spend quality time together.
TRAINING AMBITIONS AND FUTURE GOALS
When both women are asked about their training ambitions or future goals, they give two vastly different answers, which also underlines how different all everyday athletes are. For Debbie, her training ambitions include taking part in various races:
“... because it's incredibly atmospheric and motivating - and because you always push yourself a little bit more in a race.” - Debbie
However, she also thinks the competition part is fun and a good motivation to get out even on the darkest and wettest days. Her goals and ambitions include pushing boundaries and doing things that she may be nervous about, both in her work life and during training. That is why, among other things, she has signed up for her first-ever CrossFit competition in 2023.
"... simply because I don't dare" - Debbie
In Sophie's case a trip to Africa in December without a return ticket is her current motivation. There, her plan is to paint, surf, swim and do yoga for the next year.
“My goal is to create a life of balance where I always have myself with me.” - Sophie
